artist of the week: Mike Giant
We were so stoked to have the opportunity to chat with Mike Giant, the legendary artist. He's been a veteran in the game and has a large influence in the art community.
You might know him as one of the founders of Rebel8. Check out our interview with Mike.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in upstate NY and raised in Albuquerque, NM.
When did you get into art/design and why?
I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon. It's my favorite thing to do. My career as an illustrator started in college doing t-shirt graphics. I got my first full-time illustrator job in 1993 at Think Skateboards in San Francisco.
What would you say are some big influences to your creative process?
I'm self taught for the most part so I copied a lot of things from people like Patrick Nagel, Ed Roth and Charles Burns. My step-by-step process came from tattooing where we sketch on tracing paper and refine as we go.
Coffee or Tea?
Tea. Breathe Deep Yogi Tea to be specific. I had to stop drinking coffee because it makes my stomach bleed.
What's your morning ritual?
Wake up around 8am, toilet, shower, get dressed, drink a hot tea with psyllium, smoke half a joint then bike to my local diner for breakfast and wifi.
Any future projects in the works?
Just making drawings to show in future gallery shows and doing freelance work as it comes up. I'm customizing my motorcycle. It's been fun learning how to use new tools. A friend of mine is putting airbag suspension on my delivery van too. I plan to modify the van a lot over the next few years.
How would you describe your style?
I guess I'd call the style "monochromatic". I also consider it "additive" because I don't erase or white out mistakes in inking. I just start over. What I seek to express is the accumulated knowledge of my life up to this point. It's as simple as that.
