Akira has worked with brands like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rag&Bone, and Uniqlo. With such a solid portfolio, Akira shows his ability to bring out the story behind brands and truly be able to express them visually. We sat down with Akira to pick his brain.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Nagoya Aichi prefecture in Japan.
And grow up in Kawasaki city Kanagawa prefecture until come to NYC in 1998.
30 mins from center of Tokyo.


When did you get into photography and why?

I was working as flower designer in NYC about 7 years. I needed to show my work to clients.
The clear and collect color photos, so I started shoot myself, but it was so difficult!
Immediately start taking a class at new school, and ICP etc.
Morning time working as Flower designer and rest of the day as photo assistant.
Sooner Photography took more passion than doing Flower arrangements.
It was already 13 years ago,,,.

Where would you say is the best place to shoot? Where is place you haven't been to, but always wanted to?

Any place you can capture moments and feels that would be the place to shoot.

I would like to run Mt Monblanc(UTMB)

Coffee or tea?

Usually Coffee, But I love Japanese tea too.
I have been taking Japanese traditional tea ceremony ” Urasenke” class about 11 years.

Whats your morning ritual look like?

Wake up drink cup of water and grind beans.

How would you describe your shooting style?

Enough quickness and light feeling.

What type of music do you listen to? What is your favorite song now?

Root, Dancehall, Old Jamaican music. Standard Jazz especialy piano sound pick my ear now.

I listen all genres music, The key is what you want to listen then.
