Artist of the Week: HENSE

We got the chance to sit down with internationally known Atlanta based artist, Alex Brewer aka HENSE. Known for his wildly vivid, colorful murals, HENSE has made a name for himself across the contemporary art scene. Join us as we chat about how he got into art and what his daily ritual consists of.

When did you get into art and why?

I’ve been interested in art and creativity ever since I can remember. Both of my parents had a background in architecture and design, so I think that probably played a role in my wanting to pursue a career in the arts.

What would you say are some big influences to your creative process?

I really love being inspired and one of my main sources for inspiration is other artists; specifically artists who share a devotion to exploring abstraction in various forms. I also tend to be influenced by good exhibitions or public art projects.

Walk us through a day in the life of HENSE.

I’m usually up pretty early and always start the day with a cup of coffee. Sometimes I’ll brew my own or I’ll stop in and grab one on the way to the studio. I spend the first hour or two sitting in front of my computer catching up on emails. Then I’ll actually start to work.

Some days in the studio are very productive with painting and other days are somewhat uneventful. That usually means I’m spending a lot of time doing research or working on mockups on the computer. Throughout the year, I split my time between the studio and travel for projects or exhibits but I enjoy them both equally.

It’s hard to make murals or public art pieces when your in the studio all day and it’s hard to make new work when your traveling and painting outdoors. I try to keep a good balance with both practices.

Any future projects in the works?

I’m working on renovating my new studio space which is my current project but I have several public projects coming up. One of which will incorporate sculptural elements.
