Netherland's very own, Giovanni Lalin aka O i i g i, is a young producer we found through SoundCloud. We heard one track and knew we had to hit him up. During our interview, he told us he wanted to release a new track on our blog and we couldn't turn him away. Read the interview and check out Enter The Void below.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town called Venlo located in the outskirts of
the Netherlands. There isn't much to do. There's not much of a scene
there so I spent a lot of time at home on my computer or drawing.
Not long after that, my interest for producing music came. It all
changed very quickly and it soon became one of the things that
consumed a big part of my life. So after a while, my friends came to
my place instead and I would make music while they were playing
xbox or doing something random.
When did you get into music and why?
I come from a very musical family so it was fed to me with a spoon. But why I liked it was because it always made me feel some type of way and I was intrigued by how people were able to make something like that. My earliest musical memory is from Joe Satriani – Always With You Always With Me. That song made a huge impact on me and I never can thank my father enough for exposing me to that side of music because it’s the foundation of how I make music today.
What would you say are some big influences to your
Mainly the mood that I’m in or just random things that happened that day. In the city that I’m currently residing in, I see the weirdest things daily and also came across some interesting people living here.
How do you take your coffee?
I don’t drink coffee to be honest, but I do drink tea! Mostly berry tea with 2 spoons of sugar in it. Sometimes when I feel like it, I add some milk in it. If you never done it before you definitely should try it!
Walk us through a day in the life of Oiigi.
If I don’t have school, I’m awake around 10/11 am since my apartment is right next to the automatic door which makes an annoying screaking noise. I make me some tea and breakfast. After that, I hit the showers to really wake up and get fresh for the day. Afterwards, I'll probably look on my phone for messages to see if there are any things to do that day. If not, I’m working on some music which will take a big part of the day. When I’m done with that I hit the grocery store for some groceries and some snacks and I will hit the kitchen to make me some dinner which mostly ends in a disaster and me having to order some pizza. If my friends aren't coming over or if I’m not going to the city to a party, I’m probably up late working on music. This is mostly how my days look like. Nothing special actually.
Any future projects in the works?
I’m working on a EP right now which I will release this summer. Got a
few collabs with other producers and some stuff under other
aliases since the vibes are too different too release under Oiigi in
my opinion. After I release that, I will look to what comes in my path.
To kick it off I’m going to release my first song of my forthcoming
EP. So stay tuned for more!
How would you describe your style?
The best way to describe it is jazzy with a raw offbeat edge. Sometimes, people ask me if it was my intention to make it sound like that and they looked at me weird for doing it. But, in my opinion, it’s very organic and human. We’re not computers so I try not to make it sound like it’s made on one. My music is based off my mood and the daily things that come in my path, whether they’re positive or negative. Since we’re all go through the same things and phases, I hope that some people can relate to it and the vibe of the song. But overall it’s just vibes and music you can play at any time of the day.
We're stoked to be releasing O i i g i's new track right here on our blog. It's got that midnight drive vibe. Check it out:
