artist of the week: Carter Asmann

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in San Diego in Southern California. And then I went to The University of Oregon in Eugene, where I studied Fine Art and Economics.

When did you get into art and why?

I have honestly always been attracted to the art. When I was younger, I radiated towards 3D mediums but more recently, my focus has shifted towards 2D art (Drawing, printmaking, and painting)

What would you say are some big influences to your creative process?

Art History, Architecture, Product Design, and of course... the internet.
I am constantly observing and collecting visually interesting material/ideas ideas.

How do you take your coffee?

Straight up. No cream, No sugar. I typically drink americanos if Im at a coffee shop. But if Im drink coffee at home, I like to brew using a Chemex.

Walk us through a day in the life of Carter Asmann.

Im a pretty early riser, 5:30 - 6am. I stop for coffee on my way to the office every morning and I make it to my desk by 7am. I work on more administrative tasks and design work about 3pm, with a lunch break squeezed somewhere in there. I typically take a few hours off at this point to reset and run errands. And then I make my way to my art studio around 5pm where I continue draw until about 11pm.

Any future projects in the works?

I am currently working on some interesting commission pieces within my CoffeeRingDrawing series, I have a mixed media show coming up towards the end of this year in San Diego and a drawing show in Portland in December.

I am also a contributor to THE OIL AND INK EXPO, which is a traveling motorcycle art show. It stops in 9 cities across the US.

How would you describe your style/what do you seek to express with your work.

I like to describe my art as "analytical mix media". I am a very detail oriented person and that translates into my work process and final product. I like to create art that is visually intriguing and uses materials in non-traditional ways.
